Over the past months, together with writer Arnold van Bruggen, I’ve been working on The Plastic Sea — a new chapter in our ten-year project The Europeans. For our second working period, we narrowed our focus to three core themes: Water, Plastic, and Work. One of the outcomes is this series about plastic waste. Much of the fruit and vegetables found in European supermarkets are grown in southern Spain, inside unheated plastic greenhouses. The windblown plastic used to build these tunnels often ends up scattered across the landscape — creating strange, hybrid forms in the natural world.

Thanks to a grant from the Dutch Embassy, I’ll be taking part in PHotoESPAÑA PRO Talento a bordo next week — a great opportunity to share new work created in south-east Spain with an international group of curators. The Plastic Sea will become a book and exhibition, to be launched at the end of ‘25.

Last fall, as part of our project The Europeans, I worked on a study of Europe’s largest vegetable garden: the greenhouse region in southeastern Spain. Starting Friday, April 4, a small preview will be on display at Kunstuitleen Utrecht, which has recently added new works of mine to its collection. During the opening, I will give a brief talk about the project. You are welcome to join us at the opening on Friday, April 4, 2025, from 5 PM onwards.
