The Europeans is a ten-year research project on the contemporary European in a time when Europe is in crisis. There is war, a climate crisis and authoritarian regimes are on the rise. A pandemic is driving communities apart, rising nationalism and populism are reviving ghosts of the past. The political dream of a united and peaceful Europe appears increasingly fragile.
In about ten years time, van Bruggen and Hornstra will document twenty regions in Europe. Each work period in a region ends with an exhibition and the launch of a publication of the same name in the place where the work was made.
“They have just started and it will probably take years, but the result will undoubtedly compete with the classic The Americans, in which Robert Frank painted a portrait of post-war America in 1958.”
