Kingfisher, Ljubljana, Slovenia, 2025

All my working life, I’ve been in love with natural history museums. Especially when there are taxidermy animals involved—which, in pretty much every natural history museum, there are. These creatures are often mounted with incredible skill and placed by museum staff, with love and devotion, in semi-natural settings. The first time I featured taxidermy animals in a book was in 101 Billionaires, published in 2008. My collection has been steadily growing ever since. In preparation for the Ordinary People exhibition, opening in 2026, I visited the Slovenian Museum of Natural History in Ljubljana and photographed these stunning kingfishers. Perhaps even more beautiful than the real thing?
